Think Beyond the Box
Remember to Shop Local this Christmas Season
As thousands of packages arrive at Lakes Area doorsteps this Christmas season, let’s also remember the small businesses that make our community such a special place to live. Small Business Saturday, on November 30, is the perfect time to show our support and invest in the heart of our community—not just for the holidays, but all year long.
Local businesses have faced a tough year. A snowless winter and a rainy, cold June kept many tourists away, leading to slower sales during the crucial summer months when retailers often earn up to 75% of their annual income. Winter is a time to tighten belts and prepare for the year ahead. Every dollar spent locally this season and beyond helps keep these businesses thriving.
Shopping local does more than boost sales—it strengthens our entire community. At least $68 of every $100 spent at a local business stays right here, supporting jobs, schools, and local causes. Small businesses are often the ones sponsoring youth activities, donating to charities, and volunteering at events.
When you shop small, you enjoy:
- Unique finds: One-of-a-kind gifts that reflect the character of our community.
- Awesome customer service: Friendly shop owners who stand behind what they sell.
- Expert recommendations: Advice from people who know their products inside and out.

This year, the average American family is expected to spend $1,638 on gifts, travel, and entertainment during the holiday season. In addition to your online shopping, consider allocating part of your budget to support our local businesses. By doing so, you help ensure the Lakes Area remains vibrant and strong. Together, we can show we’re proud to be Lakes Proud.
On behalf of all area Chambers of Commerce, Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas to you and yours!
