Local hospitals, surgery centers, and clinics (including dental and veterinary clinics) received some good news. Governor Walz’s latest Executive Order 20-51 allows them to start nonemergency elective procedures beginning Monday, May 10 as long as they put physical distancing plans in place to protect workers and patients. Elective surgeries had been delayed to help stop the spread of COVID-19 and build up hospital capacity, including of personal protective equipment (PPE).

Facilities must adhere to certain guidelines, including having a written plan, screening and testing, PPE, and infection prevention. Resuming elective procedures is key to helping hospitals and clinics get back on track financially.

It’s also good news for those waiting for necessary medical care. You can contact your provider, if you have questions about a procedure or a hospital’s or clinic’s COVID-19 policy and safety plan.
