Brainerd is gearing up for a major road improvement project. In 2026-27, Washington Street (Highway 210) will undergo a full reconstruction, bringing much-needed updates to road conditions, traffic flow, and pedestrian access. Yes, construction will bring disruptions, but in the end, Washington Street will be safer, smoother, more attractive and more welcoming for everyone. To help businesses prepare, the Chamber and BLAEDC recently hosted two informational meetings with MnDOT on March 5, where more than 50 business and community leaders joined the discussion on construction timelines, detours, and how businesses can stay engaged throughout the process.

What to Expect

The project will be completed in phases:

  • 2026: Work begins on the eastern portion of Washington Street, including two new roundabouts and utility upgrades.
  • 2027: Construction shifts west, including downtown Brainerd and the Mississippi River bridge.
  • 2028: Final cleanup work with minimal impact.

Traffic will be rerouted, but the key takeaway is this: Brainerd businesses are staying open throughout the project. While access may look different at times, there will be multiple routes for customers to reach local businesses. MnDOT explored several detour options, including head-to-head traffic, one-way directional detours, and full closures. Business owners shared feedback on maintaining visibility, ensuring clear signage, and minimizing impacts on school zones and residential areas. By planning ahead and staying in the loop, businesses can keep things running smoothly during construction.

How We’re Supporting Businesses

The Chamber, in partnership with the City of Brainerd and BLAEDC, is working on a plan to help businesses stay strong during construction. This includes forming a business steering committee to guide strategies and ensure business voices are heard. Additionally, a survey will be sent out to gather feedback and ideas on how to best support businesses during the project. This effort may include:

  • Dedicated business liaison to provide updates and answer questions.
  • Marketing and outreach to ensure customers know businesses are open, accessible, and need the community’s support.
  • Workshops and resources focused on preparation, marketing, and operations to keep customers engaged.
  • Community promotions and events to encourage local shopping and dining.

Stay Informed and Engaged

MnDOT will host a Public Open House on March 25 at the Crow Wing County Land Services Building (Noon-2 p.m. & 4-6 p.m.). Business owners and community members are encouraged to attend, ask questions, and review the latest project details.

This is a big investment in Brainerd’s future, and while adjustments will be necessary, the result will be a stronger, more vibrant business corridor. It’s important to stay positive—if we focus on the disruptions, customers may avoid the area. Instead, we must all highlight the long-term benefits and encourage the community to continue supporting local businesses throughout construction.
