Meet Colton Maher, one of the recipients of the  2025 Four Under 40 Awards. These awards are hosted by the WAVE Young Professionals Network (a program by the Brainerd Lakes Chamber of Commerce) and recognize four outstanding leaders between the ages of 18 and 39 who live and work in the Brainerd Lakes Area.

An anonymous panel of judges reviewed and scored the submissions based on the following criteria: professional excellence, leadership, community involvement, and potential for future success. Colton Maher rose to the top and was selected by the judging panel as one of the honored award winners.

Four Under 40: Colton Maher

Founder/Broker of Woods to Water Real // Co-Owner of MN Traders Co.

For Colton Maher, coming home wasn’t just a return to familiar streets—it was a chance to build something lasting in the place that built him.

Born and raised in Pequot Lakes, Colton returned in 2018 with a fresh perspective and a deep sense of purpose. Within just a few years, he’s not only grown a successful real estate business but also created a gathering space beloved by locals and visitors alike. As founder and broker of Woods to Water Real Estate and co-owner of MN Traders Co. in Pequot Lakes, Colton is at the center of a new wave of leadership that’s reimagining what community can look like.

Woods to Water started as more than a brokerage—it was Colton’s vision for a business rooted in trust, professionalism, and people-first service. The company has earned a reputation for combining top-tier market expertise with genuine, personal connection. From lake homes to investment properties, Colton and his team have helped shape the next generation of growth in the region. His leadership is quiet but intentional. He doesn’t micromanage; he empowers. He listens first and speaks with purpose. It’s this grounded, solutions-focused style that has made him someone others want to work with—and grow with.

But real estate is only part of the story. Colton’s co-founding of MN Traders Co. marked a new chapter, one that fused hospitality, creativity, and community connection. Located in downtown Pequot Lakes, the coffee-to-cocktail eatery is more than a business—it’s a hub. A place where neighbors gather, ideas spark, and relationships deepen. It’s become a symbol of the kind of local revitalization that can happen when people invest in places and each other.

That same commitment to connection led Colton to co-create the Listen Local Podcast, where he and co-host Jacob Blaser share the stories of entrepreneurs, artists, and changemakers in the Brainerd Lakes Area. The platform has become a voice for local pride and small business energy—highlighting everything from Lakes Jam to Bean Hole Days, and elevating voices that often go unheard.

Even as his business ventures grow, Colton continues to show up for his community. He serves on both the Brainerd Lakes Chamber of Commerce and the Nisswa Chamber of Commerce Boards, roles that allow him to help shape future of the Lakes Area. He sponsors local events such as Stars & Stripes Days and Bean Hole Days, and volunteers with Lakes Area Heroes, an organization that supports local first responders and their families. Whether it’s behind the scenes or front and center, Colton is always looking for ways to give back to the community he deeply cares for.

What sets Colton apart is that his goals have never been about ego or recognition. They’re about creating something meaningful, sustainable, and rooted in community. He believes in developing people and cultivating leaders, not just employees. Colton looks for ways to blend purpose with business—without sacrificing either.

Colton Maher represents the kind of leadership that doesn’t need to shout to be heard. It shows up consistently, delivers with integrity, and lets the results speak for themselves. Through his businesses, service, and quiet influence, he’s helping shape a Brainerd Lakes Area that is both rooted in tradition and open to transformation.

And in doing so, he reminds us all that community isn’t just where you are—it’s what you make of it.

“He’s created a culture at Woods to Water where people support each other, celebrate wins together, and constantly strive to improve. He doesn’t just tell people what to do—he leads by example, whether it’s taking care of clients, giving back to the community, or navigating challenges with level-headed thinking.”
