ATHENA Awards: Lakes Area Grit & Grace
a supportive community for women facing and recovering from cancer in the Lakes Area.
Far too many of us know someone who has faced a cancer diagnosis. Along with the physical battle comes the emotional and practical challenge of navigating complex healthcare decisions while still trying to hold together family life, careers, and everyday responsibilities. In those moments, many of us wish we knew the right words to say or the most meaningful way to help.
For Autumn Loge and Melissa Dooley, that uncertainty became something deeper, a shared understanding. Their friendship was formed through their own personal battles with cancer and the realization of how powerful it is to have someone who truly gets it. Through their mutual experiences, they found strength, hope, and ultimately a calling: to ensure that no woman in the Brainerd Lakes Area has to face this journey alone.
From that vision, Lakes Area Grit & Grace was born.
Lakes Area Grit & Grace provides a compassionate community of support for women who are battling or recovering from cancer. Many of these women are leaders in their families, workplaces, and communities, individuals who spend much of their lives pouring into others. Through this organization, they are given a space where that support is returned to them.
Every woman deserves to have an “Autumn” or a “Melissa” in her life, someone who understands the uncertainty, the fear, the strength it takes to keep moving forward, and the courage required to ask the hard questions.
Beyond emotional support, Lakes Area Grit & Grace connects women with valuable resources and helps them better navigate the challenges that accompany a cancer diagnosis. By providing access to knowledge, local services, and community partnerships, the organization empowers women to approach difficult decisions with greater confidence and clarity.
The organization meets women wherever they are on their cancer journey. Whether newly diagnosed, actively in treatment, or navigating life after cancer, participants are welcomed into a community that lifts them from feelings of isolation and replaces them with connection, encouragement, and strength.
Through monthly gatherings, women are able to connect not only with one another but also with local businesses, wellness activities, and opportunities that help them re-center, recharge, and reconnect with themselves and nature during an often chaotic and overwhelming time.
At its heart, Lakes Area Grit & Grace was created to provide friendship, understanding, connection, resources, and knowledge, but perhaps most importantly, it provides a powerful reminder that no woman has to face cancer alone.
Through compassion, leadership, and lived experience, this organization embodies the spirit of the ATHENA Organizational Leadership Award by uplifting women, strengthening community, and turning personal adversity into a lasting source of hope for others.
“Their goal has always been simple but powerful: to help every woman facing cancer find her ‘Melissa’—someone who truly understands what she’s going through.”
