Meet the Award Recipient

Our highest honor at the 2026 Celebration of Excellence will be the presentation of the Business Legacy Award by the Brainerd Lakes Chamber and National Bank of Commerce to Brian and Deb Thuringer!

Nearly a century ago, in 1929, brothers Jim and Jack Madden welcomed guests to a modest Northwoods hotel and golf course on the shores of Gull Lake. During the challenges of the Great Depression, they built their business on a simple promise: to provide the very best Minnesota has to offer. While the $5 nightly room rates are long gone, that commitment to exceptional hospitality remains at the heart of Madden’s Resort today.

Brian Thuringer began his hospitality career at the Madden family-owned Pine Edge Inn in Little Falls in 1973. In the 1990s, ownership of Madden’s Resort on Gull Lake transitioned to Deb (Madden) Thuringer, daughter of Jim Madden, and her husband, Brian. Together, they embraced the responsibility of carrying forward a family legacy while thoughtfully preparing the resort for the future.

Brian and Deb formed a remarkable leadership team, each bringing unique strengths to the business. Brian oversaw the daily operations of the resort, while Deb’s creativity and attention to detail transformed cabins, guest rooms, and gathering spaces into the warm, welcoming environments for which Madden’s is known. Together, they built upon generations of excellence while creating new traditions for guests and employees alike.

Their leadership extended far beyond the resort. Brian and Deb generously invested their time, talents, and resources throughout the Brainerd Lakes Area by serving on community boards and committees, supporting local entrepreneurs, contributing to charitable organizations, and helping create opportunities that strengthen the regional economy.

Equally important was their commitment to the more than 400 seasonal and year-round employees who make Madden’s exceptional. They fostered a culture built on respect, teamwork, and gracious hospitality, encouraging employees not only to grow professionally but also to become active, engaged members of the communities they call home.

Brian’s visionary leadership also helped position Madden’s as a pioneer in environmental stewardship. Long before sustainability became an industry standard, he introduced the innovative Greenway Program, designed to carefully manage nutrients and pesticides by applying only what the golf courses needed, when they needed it. Although some questioned the approach, Brian remained committed to protecting Minnesota’s natural resources while maintaining world-class playing conditions. His forward-thinking leadership proved successful, earning Madden’s recognition with Golf Digest’s Green Star Award. Today, that original Greenway philosophy has evolved into a comprehensive sustainability program that influences every aspect of resort operations.

The legacy Brian and Deb have built is measured not only by the success of one of Minnesota’s premier resorts, but also by the countless employees they have mentored, the communities they have strengthened, and the family values they have passed on to the next generation. Today, their children, Abbey and Ben, proudly continue that tradition, leading Madden’s Resort with the same vision, integrity, and commitment that have defined the family for generations.

Congratulations to Brian and Deb Thuringer on receiving the 2026 Brainerd Lakes Chamber Business Legacy Award. Your lifelong dedication to hospitality, innovation, environmental stewardship, community leadership, and family business has created an enduring legacy that will continue to inspire generations to come.
