A Day in the Life at the Brainerd Lakes Area Welcome Center

Posted on: July 25th, 2013 by Donna Ehnert

Brainerd Lakes Area Welcome CenterMany of you know Holly Holm, our Visitor Services Coordinator, at the Chamber’s Brainerd Lakes Area Welcome Center, south of Brainerd. So you then know Holly knows how to live life to the fullest, is a great advocate for our region, has great social skills, and loves animals – she’s just not apparently best suited as a monkey wrangler.

About 500 people walk through the doors each day during the summer months at the Welcome Center and nearly as many phone calls are logged. The staff at the Welcome Center help visitors with questions ranging from routine to obscure. But life at the Welcome Center has gotten a little hairy of late. Let me explain.

Holly has helped save an abandoned dog – one that didn’t necessarily want to be rescued. It was frightened by most people. That’s really not all that unusual – for Holly.

But not everyone can say they held a kangaroo or chased a monkey. And it’s safe to say next to no one has had a kangaroo as its namesake.

Meet the newly named Holly, the kangaroo, held by our very own Holly.

Owners of Safari North Wildlife Park, which will open next spring near the Brainerd Lakes Area Welcome Center south of Brainerd on Highway 371, have been introducing our Welcome Center staff to their animals. The kangaroos, Scamper and Holly, are adapting well in their brief visits to the Brainerd Lakes Area. But the verdict is out on Janet, the monkey, who dashed from Holly’s arms at the Welcome Center and toured the facility. The animals are again on their way home but look for them to call the Brainerd Lakes Area their home next summer.

That’s just another day in the life at the Welcome Center – back to selling tickets for NHRA Nationals at Brainerd International Raceway, fielding questions from visitors, and welcoming our guests to our slice of paradise, the Brainerd Lakes Area, Minnesota’s premier vacation destination. – Kathi Nagorski Leary, Communications Director
